if you write bts fic and you're white, at the very least, accept that you are entering into a space that doesnt belong to you. your queerness doesn't change that either, buddy.
this seems to be something that most white fic writers will say they agree with, but in practice, upon receiving criticism, they do not put this proclaimed belief into action. you have to actually do the research, and you have to be prepared to give shit up upon learning new info
maybe you'll learn some new historical context that would make your fic offensive and painful to many of the korean and asian fans who read it. if these fans criticize what you've put out, your next step should not be to disregard that critique on the basis of """tone."""
tone policing is an implement of white supremacy. but i think that many of the writers who do this actually are familiar w that concept, and in other contexts, may "call out" tone policing. what do you actually do when something you personally care about is at stake, though?
also, like, this doesnt come naturally to most white ppl bc it's a process of resisting/unlearning habits & morals that white supremacy instills. some of the things ppl have brought up recently i wouldnt have considered when i first started reading fic that wasnt abt white ppl.
these thoughts did not originate from my brain. ive learned a huge amt about the impact of fic & fictional portrayals of histories of colonized ppl from @buchaechim, @moonlitchild_, @sippetile, and @kirbabbie and also would like to boost this thread https://twitter.com/nonbinaryjimin/status/1388553666408374278?s=20
