Breaking: The former head of the NCGOP just reported there are plans to heavily gerrymander our congressional districts this year.

Current NC map: 8 GOP, 5 DEM

Reported new map: 10 GOP, 4 DEM

This would be open corruption, perpetrated against you, the voter.

A few important points:

- This report was written by the former executive director of the NC GOP. He is a noted insider, employed for “journalism” for that specific reason.

- After an immediate backlash, the report was recently edited to omit the 10-4 reference.
- The report also suggests that the new district may be drawn to favor state Rep. Tim Moore, the current GOP Speaker of the House.
- Given that there are currently 5 Dem seats - and that our state will be gaining a new congressional district - going down to 4 Dem seats could only be accomplished via *extreme* gerrymandering.
- Stating in advance what partisan split they want to see from redistricting is well-worn territory for GOP state legislators.

Here are two examples:
"I propose that we draw the map to give a partisan advantage to 10 Republicans and 3 Democrats, because I do not believe it's possible to draw a map with 11 Republicans and 2 Democrats."

And:

"We want to make it clear that to the extent that we are going to use political data in drawing this map, it is to gain partisan advantage on the map."

No one is shocked that they appear to be running the same play again.

This is why we *absolutely must* use our opportunity at the federal level to end gerrymandering for our congressional districts.

That’s the most important piece of HR1.
Why do we need a federal bill? Why not solve this on the state level?

The first bill I ever filed was to end gerrymandering. They sent it to the Ways & Means committee, which hasn’t met in 20 years.

That’s why.
They aren’t going to stop unless *we stop them* federally.

Passing a federal law that bans this kind of obvious election rigging by implementing independent redistricting is how we do that.
