Hajime No Ippo: Battle Of Hawk

Brief thread on what makes this so special for me. 2 very simple fundamentals of storytelling; buildup and execution. It’s these 2 things that make Battle Of Hawk what it is, and elevated it to the level that I think it stands at.

Buildup

It’s simple enough, make the reader anticipate what comes next, it’s one of the core principles of writing, but what makes battle of hawk so good. In short, it’s how emotionally charged it is. The anticipation for this fight is built on what Morikawa makes you feel.

In short, every scene hawk appears in portrays him in the most negative way possible (he’s a great antagonist for this) it differs from similar set ups since it mostly doesn’t utilise violence to do this, but disrespect; ie. dialogue and behaviour. You want to see him beat

That’s where this press conference scene is so brilliant. Firstly hawk shows no interest in a fight that Takamura has almost killed him self training for. He follows this up by hitting on a reporter, completely disregarding what’s happening around him.

This scene is as tense as it is thanks to the work done in the episodes prior to it. The audience feels as if just placing them together would make sparks fly. So as hawk keeps disrespecting him, that tension builds. Until he hits the coach.

As I mentioned, violence is commonly used to invoke feelings of anger or hatred in the viewer, but here it’s used as the straw that breaks the camels back, it’s the line that was crossed that seals the deal. The audience is now firmly in Takamura’s shoes.

Following that, Hawk snaps, breaking his silence and speaking his mind about the fight for the first time. Anyone would be seething watching this, the camera movement and the sound design both accentuate the anger you’ll feel at this point, and the fight is perfectly set up.

The bout itself, managed to live up to the impeccable set up and more, I’ll keep this section brief as I’d rather not talk about every single round. In summary, it was a near perfect culmination of all the buildup it received.

It was brutal, emotionally packed, dense with action and one of the most tense fights I’ve seen in the medium. There’s a few truly standout scenes that really made this fight stand out among the rest. What’s crazier is how the fight fleshes out Takamura and Kamogawa

Every round past the 5th was legendary, the fight paid off the anger that it made the viewer feel with a violent and bloody beating Takamura gives hawk while unconscious, it’s satisfying and feels rewarding.

It also hits on the emotional front, with this incredibly scene where in Takamura is able to get up from a knockdown with the support of everyone he knows. It’s powerful (Ippo is great at these scenes) and shines a light on a side of him we don’t really see.

The conclusion ran along those same lines, so in short it was just an impeccable fight, but none of it would’ve been possible without the immensely effective buildup it received.
also I’m not proofreading this so stfu about spelling mistakes
