*cracks knuckles* Let's talk about Alina and the Darkling's musical themes and what Joseph Trapanese had to say about it đŸ§” #darklina #thedarkling #AlinaStarkov
Disclaimer: No beta. I don’t know anything about music theory and I am no professional. This is just a compilation what Trapanese had to say and perhaps my opinions as a listener. I am, however, a fan of soundtracks and leitmotifs so hey~
In the show, Alina's theme is the one on the violin and Kirigan's on the base. Here's something about making those choices and how both their themes mirror each other [okay keep the word "mirror image" in mind we'll get back to that] #darklina
Basically, Alina = violin, Kirigan/The Darkling/Sasha = Bass. And at times you can hear their themes switch(Kirigans theme on the violin and Alinas theme on the bass)
Joseph uses the word mirror, reflections, and influence a lot when talking about their themes. This from Variety:
"The key themes belong to Alina, the orphan whose unexpected power might save her country, and General Kirigan, the Darkling whose own powers are gradually revealed. Their themes are “mirror reflections of each other,” Trapanese explains." #darklina
End Notes: I am a clown. I know this. I’ve embraced this fact for years. But this just makes the connection between the Darkling and Alina more apparent. I wont say that their themes intertwined with each other. +
Music does that all the time and if I listen to the soundtrack and sounds again, I know I’ll hear Alina’s theme intertwined with Mal’s. +
but for the composer to say that the Darkling and Alina’s theme mirror each other....that information is enough for me to grab another drink and sit down. What in the two-sides-of-the-same-coin is going on. #darklina
Little add on: here are the music for some of the scenes thats available on the soundtrack
