Alright, time to do some #RAS analysis on the tackles taken in the first round!

First off, here's who we're talking about:
Penei Sewell was drafted with pick 7 of round 1 in the 2021 draft class. He scored a 8.99 RAS out of a possible 10.00. This ranked 116 out of 1143 OT from 1987 to 2021. https://ras.football/ras-information/?PlayerID=14087&pos=OT #RAS #Lions
Alex Leatherwood was drafted with pick 17 of round 1 in the 2021 draft class. He scored a 9.69 RAS out of a possible 10.00. This ranked 37 out of 1143 OT from 1987 to 2021. https://ras.football/ras-information/?PlayerID=17816&pos=OT #RAS #Raiders
Rashawn Slater was drafted with pick 13 of round 1 in the 2021 draft class. He scored a 9.71 RAS out of a possible 10.00. This ranked 34 out of 1143 OT from 1987 to 2021. https://ras.football/ras-information/?PlayerID=19064&pos=OT #RAS #Chargers
Since 2000, we've had 34 pro bowl offensive tackles who qualified for #RAS.

Among them, 26 (76.5%) posted a #RAS above 8.00, the same range as the three players selected in the first round this year who qualified.
Offensive tackle has been one of those positions that has been incredibly correlative with athletic testing and NFL success. It's very, very rare a player comes in with poor testing and finds his way among the best offensive tackles.
That's a big reason why Orlando Brown has been such an outlier. Not just that he tested poorly and has done well, but that he's an offensive tackle who did that. He's one of only TWO pro bowl offensive tackles since 2000 to score below 5.00 for #RAS.
What do those numbers mean? Well, it means that three out of every four pro bowl offensive tackles tested in the top 20% for the position.
Those same kinds of numbers hold true when we start to look at things like starts or AV, though I'm only in the preliminary stages of gathering that data to better evaluate these things.
Alex Leatherwood and Rashawn Slater both measured in the same range. Other tackles in a similar range, though they may not be the same style of player, are Tyron Smith, Chad Clifton, Trent Williams, and Terron Armstead.
Players who measured in a similar range as Penei Sewell, thought hey may not be the same style of player, are Andrew Whitworth, Willie Roaf, D'Brickashaw Ferguson, and Jason Peters.
We labor a lot over whether a tackle has too short of arms, whether their shuttle was good enough, how good their splits were.

But in my experience, it's more about how good the overall athletic package is rather than anything specific. Get yourself some athletes outside!
