The news of a driver crashing into an outdoor dining structure in Astoria last night is absolutely devastating & like all traffic violence, was entirely preventable. My heart goes out to the loved ones of the deliverista who was killed & I wish a quick recovery to all injured. 1/ https://twitter.com/TransAlt/status/1387959427664338946">https://twitter.com/TransAlt/...
This tragedy only highlights the importance of pedestrian-friendly, car-free spaces in our city, something I& #39;m proud this Council has prioritized throughout this term but with even more urgency during this pandemic. But it& #39;s clear that we can& #39;t change the culture of NYC alone. 2/
If we want to make our streets safer for people, for everyone from delivery workers to groups of friends walking down the block, we need the Mayor& #39;s office to follow this Council& #39;s lead and make a much more proactive effort in reducing vehicular traffic on our streets, period. 3/
As always, this Council stands ready to make our streets safer for the people of NYC. We did it again yesterday by codifying #OpenStreetsNYC, which is absolutely something to celebrate.

But today, we mourn the loss of yet another life lost to preventable traffic violence. 4/4
