Edi Cavani is here to stay. [Short Thread]
I was wondering why Cavani& #39;s movement into wide positions was creating a much greater threat than Martial and Greenwood when they play at CF
The answer to this is quite simple. Cavani is a more traditional CF, who operates centrally, meaning that his runs are more direct through the centre. Martial and Greenwood can also act as wingers and they look to get involved in the build up, moving to the flanks.
This means that as a defending side, when Cavani starts you& #39;re expecting runs through the middle and when Martial or Greenwood start, you& #39;re expecting runs out wide. Your defensive organisation is based on expecting these runs
Now when Martial or Greenwood run wide, the defence is prepared for that and drop their CDM or winger back to help the full back and cover. They aren& #39;t expecting movement through the middle and can look to overload the flank and snuff out the attack
When Cavani plays, the CB is on alert for movement through the centre. After tracking these movements right through the game, when Cavani moves out wide, it is the CB that still follows him, not the full backs. This means a CB is out of position and the back line shifts over
Cavani moving to the flank from the centre creates space down the opposite flank, for the RW or RB to exploit. We have already seen this with Greenwood& #39;s goal vs Spurs as well. This space isn& #39;t created when the other two make the run simply because the defence doesn& #39;t shift over.
So even though it may seem like Cavani moves away from goal a as well, it is his excellent movement through the middle that plays on the opposition& #39;s mind, meaning that he isn& #39;t marked the same way. His ability to mix these runs up creates so many more chances for United.
