When I was seven I took the subway home from school with my brother who is a year older than me. Sometimes he had sports and I did it alone. Kids aren’t stupid. https://twitter.com/cg_canning/status/1387057951437897728
Also I let my child take the subway 5 stops to the swim lesson where they had gone for their whole life when they were 8, with a friend, and the first time I followed them secretly there and back but everyone was fine.
They realized on the way home that I was secretly following them and when I emerged from the subway they had hidden behind a barrier and jumped out to surprise me. I learned “secret follow” from my grandma but apparently didn’t perfect the craft.
Now I have an almost 12 year old who I must say is pretty good at life. Maybe a bit too good at times, there could be more kid-life. But honestly I couldn’t imagine escorting my child to their first university class.
