There is a widespread myth that writing requires willpower, inner strength, and grit. Writing must be hard. If you were only disciplined enough, you’d get your writing done no matter what.
That’s actually not true. (thread) https://writingcooperative.com/how-to-write-without-discipline-2d3e9fe0868f
Relying on willpower can backfire. Organisational psychologist @BenjaminPHardy explains in his book Willpower Doesn’t Work that willpower is "a finite resource that depletes with use. As a result, by the end of your strenuous days, your willpower muscles are exhausted.”
What you really need is a writing environment that removes the need for willpower. There are many ways to design your writing environment — all you need is a bit of curiosity and the willingness to play.
In his book Deep Work, @CalNewport2 recommends the following strategy to get into the deep work zone easily and regularly: (1) Decide where you will work and for how long, (2) Plan how to manage distractions, (3) Commit to rituals to support your work.
My top tips: 1. Separate goal setting and writing time -- 2. Plan your writing time and location (!) -- 3. Design an energy-proof schedule -- 4. Remove distractions -- 5. Plan how you will celebrate your writing wins -- 6. Recover and reset -- 7. External accountability
