The 37k / 60k issue explained by someone who has had recruiter, HR business partnering, and Compen Ben experience

✨a thread✨
People are questioning why they earn less despite yrs of experience etc. So lets talk about what factors affect your pay. For this discussion, lets stick to corporate.
Ask yourself: What industry do you work in? Whats is your field? What company do you work for? Do you work for a big company? A BPO? A start up? Who are the competitors of your company?

All these factors affect your salary.
Companies have something they call “peer group” which is essentially a list of companies they compete with because of having the same business/products thus they compete for the same group of talent. They benchmark salary against one another to keep competitive.
If you work for a multinational or FMCG (Unilever, P&G etc) chances are these companies pay higher since their business is larger thus they can afford to pay higher & they have internal pay standards.. They want the best of the best and pay higher to keep you with them longer.
Lets take the 37k offer for a marketing role as an example. Marketing is a multifaceted role (digital, adver, sales, etc) that is directly involved/responsible for sales & revenue. Basically if wala wenta ang marketing team mo, bagsak negosyo mo.
37k for a marketing position in an FMCG/multinational company is normal because they have a lot of products to sell and they need smart and talented people to sell it. Its a strategic role which needs soft skills that few have. They need young blood to keep up with market trends.
Some start-ups (especially tech) can also pay quite high since they dont have much policies & have the flexibility and most of them are centered on highly specialized technical roles.

The more specialized, hard to find, or rare your skills are, the higher you can get paid.
So why are you paid lower than that fresh grad? Well in technical HR terms, your industry doesn’t pay high, your company is small or takes advantage of their workers and pays low, or there could be an abundance of talent in your field.
A good example is Call center agents - they dont pay so high because they can easily source talent. The same goes for nurses, though a specialized job; there are so many nurses in the country that they dont need to pay high to get someone who knows how to do the job.
From an economic perspective, The system is taking advantage of 3rd world countries who are willing to accept low pay since we survival is our priority. Salary is based on data, if the data shows most fresh grads is willing to accept 15k for a job then that will set the standard.
Although I do professionally think a 60k starting for a fresh grad is steep even for marketing, I acknowledge the need for fresh grads to start demanding higher as well. Its important to know your worth and schools should be teaching that.
I was told that the most a fresh grad can ask for is 20k pero thats FALSE. I was offered much higher than that and nahiya pa ako nung una thinking I didn’t deserve it well in fact it was just right. KNOW YOUR WORTH and fresh grads: dont rush into a low paying job!
However, do acknowledge as well that asking for higher and declining a low offer is a privilege in itself. It shows that you have the time to wait for a better offer when most of us need mouths to feed ASAP.
There’s a lot more than can be said and there a lot more examples I can give but lets end this here kasi ang haba na.
