#ACW Seven Pines fight has started. Surprisingly the green 103rd Pennsylvania stopped three of Garland’s charging units and forced a firefight, thus alerting the rest of Casey’s division.
The poor 103rd PA is trying to hold of a brigade! Rebs win the initiative for turn 2, Garland’s 23rd NC flank charges the green Pennsylvanians and they run Whipped for the year, crossing the abatis like white tailed deer. #ACW #SevenPines

Critical moment: 1st NY Arty Low on Ammo with Garland’s rebs closing hard. General Casey uses both his a staff officers to bring up more ammo for the Empire State gunners. #SevenPines #ACW
Shockingly good shooting by the NY gunners with their replenished ammo! A horrific blast of canister caused 5(!) casualties in the 23rd NC and the veteran tar heels fail their Elephant test and fall back Whipped, unforming the 2nd FL as they go. #SevenPines #ACW
Meanwhile two of Roses’ regiments are formed and the rest of the brigade is slowly trickling out of the swampy woods while Palmer’s green Yankees watch nervously. #SevenPines #ACW
#SevenPines #ACW update. Rodes’ brigade stalls hesitant. Yankees win initiative and Fighting old Silas Casey orders BGen Naglee “Charge them, by God!” Seeing the disorder in Garland’s brigade this is a sound idea.
As Naglee’s green troops surge forward, Casey orders Btty A, 1st NY Light Arty, to limber and fall back to its next firing position.
On the right the 104th PA take only light casualties as the steady veterans of the 34th VA receive them with a volley, and close the charge, but the Virginians hold firm and after a brief tussle the Keystone State boys grimly retire. #SevenPines
Unfortunately the 11th Maine takes hits from the 2nd MS and flunk their Elephant test. Even with their Brigadier attached, they are Whipped and fall back like geese. Their flank supports, the 100th NY, have no choice but to retire. Garland can breathe easier. #SevenPines #ACW
I think charging was a sound move for the US. Even if it fails it has the effect of retiring the line and buys time for the Union to prepare its second line of defence, which will be the second linked scenario of this fight.
