Thank you to @cian_mccormack and @rtenews for coming to #DúnLaoghaire to talk about #litter. The reason I want a national conversation on this topic is because:
1. We perform so badly on litter in Ireland by comparison to other countries. It’s embarrassing!!

2. We have a real problem with dog fouling, cigarette butts, chewing gum on streets & illegal dumping! Shockingly 50% of litter in DLR Big Belly Bins is domestic waste! It’s not right!
3. Our disposable culture is adding to the problem. We need a #DespotReturnSchemes for cans & bottles and more environmentally friendly packaging
4. In @dlrcc we spend MILLIONS on waste management and litter control cleaning up after ourselves (€10m p/annum or over €27000 p/day!!)! Replicate this over all Dublin LAs! This is funded by your #LocalPropertyTax so it’s actually like throwing money away

5. Armies of #TidyTowns volunteers go out every week to keep our towns/villages pristine! They have to work so hard to do so! It’s not right. Thank you @DunLaoghaireTT @MonkstownTidy @DttDes @TidyTownsIre for everything you do
6. @dlrcc cleansing staff work extremely hard to keep DLR clean. They have been faced with some shocking situations particularly recently and deserve our thanks! 7: I welcome that @dlrcc will increase the number of bins and frequency of collection. This is great news. But we also have a part to play! 8. We can’t credibly think of ourselves as a nation who care about our #environment until we clean up after ourselves!
9. We need our parks and outdoor spaces more than ever right now especially as we head into an outdoor summer! There should be a zero tolerance attitude to littering.
