It's really great that Muslims give so much charity especially during Ramadan. But giving this much to charities that provide short term solutions to problems such as poverty and homelessness really cannot be the solution. Please let's start thinking long term and structurally.
Before you raise money climbing mount snowdown for homelessness ask yourself: how do I contribute to landlordism? Before you create a justgiving page for a well abroad or for food for refugees ask yourself how do I vote? Am I part of the problem here?
Do I contribute to the conditions of possibility that perpetuate homelessness and poverty? IS my charity building connections with local activists to create actual structural change?
That we have to give so much money in charity is part of the problem. It is a symptom of society that cannot meet the needs of it's people.
