Modern Singapore is a lot like 1980s America: its ruling class is a bunch of racist, horrible people that back violence against its minorities and are insulted by the insinuation that this country is worth anything less than your full devotion https://twitter.com/lim_jialiang/status/1388008909399461890
Another way we're a lot like 1980s America is that our ruling class has tied our welfare to capitalism. We act like a country from the early 1850s in this respect, refusing to acknowledge labour as a separate force altogether
Singapore survives on its luck. All it takes to bring the house of cards down is a single economic crisis, and if the last two are any indication, this government will pretend that there isn't a crisis and sooner allow thousands to starve on the streets than change course
Singaporean nationalism is the worst part of this. A country that still operates so closely to an economic colony and rejects ever changing its colonial apparatus because of an apparent 'speciality' isn't just foolish, it's a recipe for disaster
This country has the arrogance of Empire, the late-stage symptoms of a failing state, and a teeter-totter relationship with acknowledging either of them
