lrt - i don't think people understand how hard disability is to get, how arbitrary the decisions are, especially in the US, and how little it gives you. i don't think people understand what federal/state disability MEANS
usually i keep this off main but. the process of applying can take YEARS, and requires mental, financial and physical commitments that are so high the irony would make joseph heller blush. And at the end they can deny you with no explanation, deny an appeal, and say 'start over'
if you don't have a solid work history, you are stuck with SSI, which is capped at under 800 a month. and means you cannot have more than 2 thousand something in savings. Even on disability, many requirements to live cost more than people on SSI are legally aloud to have.
having a disability decision go in your favor gives you so little, but NOT getting one closes off the few doors disability opens. non-disabled people have no idea how many essential services are straight up not available without being on disability,
and if you can find it private its... more money than a disabled person can afford. Every time you hear about welfare fraud, especially disability, I want you to do me a favor and start swinging fists
