If it's in a controlled setting and people end up actually consuming 1800kcals of either food, there will be similar fat loss (slightly more in the steak group perhaps due to protein/TEF)

If it's in a free-living setting, adherance comes into play > https://twitter.com/Shane_of_AZ/status/1387983437534044162
We know that protein can have a unqiue satiety effect so the chances are that people would end up feeling more satisifed on the steak diet, adherence would be better, and they'd ultimately eat less than the donut group >
Donuts are also engineered to be hyperpalatable, making them easy to overconsume. They are also energy dense, low in fibre, and low in protein. Three components which predict how much someone will eat >
Although there will also be people who find the steak diet very boring/restrictive and will struggle to adhere to it. So weight loss may not be as impressive as expected in the steak group >
So.

Controlled setting/people are fed equal amount of food = similar fat loss.

In the real world = Steak diet obviously wins, mainly due to donuts sucking.

Which is why nobody recommends a diet based on hyperpalatable, ultra processed food lol >
So at the end of the day, the whole argument is a pretty shitty strawman and not an entirely useful question. The answer is pretty obvious when you put some thought into it.
