I’ve been wanting to speak freely about this since 2016. I have finally gathered the courage to do it. Typing this in itself is very scary but I know this is the right thing to do for myself and for all the people all over the world who are like me.
In 2016 at the age of 20, I gathered the courage to visit a gynaecologist for the first time out of concern. I had never ever had a period in my life. I always thought it would come but it never did...till this day.
After countless tests, scans and Dr consultations, I was diagnosed with a condition called androgen insensitivity syndrome (AIS).
XX chromosomes are found in ‘females’ whilst XY chromosomes are found in ‘males’. I have XY chromosomes, like males. I also was not born with a uterus. Instead, I had internal testes. So I was born with balls lol except they never dropped but stayed inside my body.
My body never responded to the XY chromosomes and testosterone which my body was producing which is why when I was born, I was externally 100% female. Nobody knew that I was genetically ‘male’ until I decided to go to the doctor at the age of 20.
No, I’m not a man. I’m a woman. For clarity, my pronouns are she/her and I am an intersex woman

No, I’m not attracted to women. I have always been attracted to men prior to my diagnoses till this day.

No, I do not have a penis and I was not born with one. I look 100% female phenotypically, just not genetically.
My hope in coming out is to raise awareness that life is not black and white. Not every woman has a period. Not every woman can get pregnant. Not everyone conforms to what you know about biology or what your religion prescribes.
From this day onwards, I want to be intersex and not be ashamed about it. I would also like to raise awareness about it. There are as many intersex people as there are people with red hair. Yes, chances are you’ve probably interacted with an intersex person before !
I would like to urge and encourage you all to stop viewing the world from a heteronormative perspective. There is diversity in genetics. The same diversity is found in the animal kingdom.
Be kind and I hope I’ve taught you something new today
