The bear case for Twitter:

-> This ad is costing me less than $0.05, literary!
Well… only if you hit the Follow button, otherwise it& #39;s for free.

Read the thread as I share what I think is wrong and what’s great about Twitter…
2/

ad business model is not the right biz model for Twitter. As is evident I have been able to reach thousands by spending virtually nothing, hopefully, no one hits follow button so literary nothing.
3/
seemingly there are lots of untaken ad slots, and rightfully so. there are many reasons for that, 2 most important ones: users are on a mission on the app and Twitter doesn’t have enough user data points to compete with GOOG, FB
4/

a. twitter has become the top of the funnel, driving FREE traffic to blogs, newsletters, newspapers, etc. they in turn monetize the traffic through paywall and/or renting ad spots to FB and GOOG!
5/

why is twitter successful in driving traffic to the mentioned websites but runs unsuccessful ads?
I guess users are on twitter to get the content and connect with the content creators!
6/
b. twitter has become the greatest PR tool for companies.
why? coz users are interested in connecting with or hearing from the individuals in the organizations, not the PR departments.
7/
where else can you directly connect with @ jack, the CEO of Square ? or @ nedsegal, Jack’s friend who works at Twitter.

again ads are missed-matched...

The bull case:

what& #39;s twitter great at? things I just mentioned…

IMO twitter should monetize that

not just super followers, but also a subscription model for creators.
equip creators with better tools to find lead, manage their followers, etc., and charge for the tools
9/
the same goes for the PR vertical ->
Twitter business account was mentioned in the earnings call:

first: why wasn’t that held on Spaces? Just think about how many companies would hold earning calls, Q&As, news conferences, etc on Spaces.
10/
second: adding maps, corporate phone numbers, etc wouldn’t add much value to the users. unless the plan is to send traffic to google maps!

give organizations PR tools that enable key personnel to engage directly with users AND charge for the tools!
11/
there is no need to focus on the highly competitive ad market where twitter is at a disadvantage to the plays.

I believe that twitter is in a very unique position to monetize its services. TAM is huge, it is expanding, and twitter has no competition!

If there is one takeaway from this thread is that anyone who followed the account after seeing the ad owes me $0.05.

pay me $0.05 directly or alternatively get into groups of 50 and get me a starbucks drip coffee!!
P.S.

make sure you like and retweet so I won’t run the risk of getting charged one/50th of a starbuks drip coffee!

Cheers!
