katy perry’s harleys in hawaii animated music video meaning, a thread
the hidden message behind the animated video is a culture. society tends to culturally appropriate other cultures bc they’re not educated in it, which sometimes can affect people of the culture to lose touch if exposed to it for too long bc their mentality changes
here’s the whole story from harleys in hawaii’s animated music video
these are tourist, also can be considered as uncultured people. the little boy is waving his arms bc that’s what he was told or has the mentally of what “hula dancing” is, but in reality there’s no “arm-waving” at all
the father littered and made her slip on a banana peal so she replaced herself with a dancing lamp and left work with her friend. she was over the fact that tourists weren’t treating her culture properly, sorta mocking them and the slip was the tipping point for her so she left
although the boss of this restaurant is a native, he was starting to forget his own culture because he had been surrounded by foreigners for so long. so when the hula dancer replaced herself with the lamp, he didn’t realize. until the skirt of the lamp came off
knowing that the tourist knew nothing of their culture especially hula dancing so the lamp picked up the skirt and continued dancing as if it’s the real dancer bc it knew that no one would notice. and surely enough they didn’t bc they wouldn’t tell what’s real and what’s not
so the boss chased after them. he was planning to yell at them for leaving their job but it backfired bc his mother was the one did all the consoling. she kept him in check and reminded him of his culture. and slowly it all came back. and they all danced it out
