since people are talking about the jacksonville jaguars, one of the speculative sports conspiracy theories I believe is that Jacksonville only got an expansion team because the NFL owners were too dumb to understand the difference between municipal and metro area populations.

It's too embarrassing for them to admit now that they fucked up by giving a team to a market smaller than Providence, RI so it just kinda persists despite being arguably the worst media market/franchise combination in American sports.

None of this is meant as offense to the good people of Jacksonville, FL but tbh even they seem sort of bemused by the Jaguars' continued presence there
