Ireland, and especially Dublin, has been in one long housing crisis for decades. It has been created and sustained by deliberate policies. No one expects a ‘quick fix’ but the absolute lack of ANYTHING is the result of deliberate policy rooted in profit driven ideology.
I’m 40, I saw the madness of the boom and the desolation of the crash, I saw rents rise and fall and rise again, I’ve watched house prices rise way beyond the reach of working people. I’ve watched it all suck the joy out of people, fracture communities & drive people out.
I’ve seen solutions dismissed as ‘impossible’ while investors count their millions and the state shovels more millions into schemes that do nothing to address security or affordability. And all the while people sleep in tents, in hotel rooms, on couches, in parents box rooms
people live in dread of rising rent & eviction. People look into a future trapped btwn precarious rent & unaffordable housing.
So long as the people making policy dont know what any of that feels like, nothing will change.
