Spent some time in the emergency department this eve talking about how valuable it is to ensure that those admitted with mental health issues are given a full physical. Ill tell you why.
Those with chronic illness may find it difficult to access care, take care of their health, enjoy healthy diets, as well as experience other health effects from long term treatment.
Often I find those admitted to psychiatric units have undiagnosed conditions, including issues with blood sugar, blood pressure, dermatological conditions and even muscular issues. It is sad that these go amiss.
An ED visit, however inopportune, is an opportunity to pick up on things that may go unnoticed. When someone is suffering day to day, things are tolerated when they shouldnt be, or are silent to perception and interest.
We owe it to our patients to treat their physical health as well as mental, and the team I saw this evening realised this and were thoughtful and forthright. A true breath of fresh air.
I know ED is busy, and it really stood out that they took the time to talk and learn, as well as teach me. This is what we need, to take a holistic and body-mind approach to care across services.
Our bodies tell a story about our minds, our focus and what we find important. There are almost always subtle clues to someones story, and with the right lens we can pick up what may be hidden.
