Might as well say this now since certain topics are going around: Sociopaths/psychopaths do not deserve your sympathy. More often than not, they are abusers, or at the very least will use people at their whim.
Just because it's a disorder doesn't mean people need to put up with them. If you want to befriend someone who has antisocial personality disorder, that's your choice. No one else should feel like they need to risk their mental health for the sake of someone without empathy.
I feel like some people are going too far with trying not to be ableist that they're going to let potential abusers into their lives for the sake of being "inclusive" and "non-offensive." Please educate yourself.
"Without Conscience: The Disturbing World of the Psychopaths Among Us" by Robert D. Hare is a very excellent and eye opening book. There are a few other resources you can use but this is by far the best, with Dr. Hare being one of the lead experts on psychopathy.
Learning about this disorder has helped myself and my husband so much. I was able to cut off a family member and an ex friend from my life and hubby was able to realize what kind of person his abusive ex was.
They are manipulative, they feign like they care, like they have some sort of emotional attachment and that they will change, but they do not. Life with people like this is a constant state of forgiveness, being used and hurt, back to forgiveness, rinse and repeat.
