The biggest problem Mikel Arteta has, is that his outlook on football is too objective and black and white, he doesn't take into account things like psychological aspect of a game and the emotional aspect of football. (1/?)
Every strange line up he puts up, he assumes the players will do EXACTLY what the game plan requires to the minute details. Football is not like that tho. Your tactics need to be flexible and take into account the ability of each player on the pitch. (2/?)
In football, an opposition player simply moving 5 meters to the left, right, up or down can nullify the passing angle/move you have been working on for days during training. You can't rely on it, especially if you are managing Arsenal players
(3/?)
Objective tactical approach can never take into account certain things in a game. For example, its evident that Martinellis presence on the pitch just seems to elevate everyone else's game by a little amount. There is no tactical reason to explain it. It's pure psychology/emotion
Man managers like Klopp understand and thrive on this. They know that regardless of how brilliant their tactics are to nullify the opposition, if the players are not feeling well going into a game, even by 1% it will make Liverpool's performance worse. (5/?)
You see teams winning duels for example despite having inferior players. It doesn't make sense. How are they winning those duels ?It's because the players on that pitch are mentally much more sharp in that given game.We saw how we started winning duels when Gabi came on (6/?)
Arteta needs to realize the impact these small things can have. Yeah, Martinelli might not be the best tactical option for a given game, but you know he will make everyone else around him work fraction harder. That has a huge impact on the game.He needs to start doing these things
A Football match isn't like a game of chess. In chess, whoever makes the objectively and mathematically the right move wins. In football we see every week the "worse team" win. So you need to make certain choices just to maximize that chance you will have in a game. (8/?)
