Reminder: it is official Green Party policy to support a high speed North-South railway to reduce short haul flights.

Such a railway would also reduce lorries and cars on the road, by vastly increasing local freight/stopping train services by separating high speed trains.
HS2 is not just an upgrade in speed and capacity for the often overcrowded Avanti/LNER high speed national services, but it frees up the East Coast/West Coast main lines to run more local stopping services. Currently local services are required to get out of the way of high speed
Any loss of habitat, especially ancient woodland, is extremely regrettable.

However, HS2 doesn't affect nearly as much as is often claimed, and building HS2 would mean more ancient woodland is saved overall, as road schemes (10x more damaging per mile) aren't needed as much.
