Watching #COVID19BC presser live on CPAC - some details and quotes to follow

“Hospitals in smaller communities don’t have the capacity to carry any additional burden right now
The number of people in hospital is at the highest levels we’ve seen - and people requiring specialized critical care is the highest ever ” - BC PHO Dr Henry #CovidZeroBC #bcpoli
“We are using every last drop of vaccine & will continue to do whatever we need to to break the chains of transmission, but we need your help. We are in a tug of war with #COVID19... We need to dig in our heels and use our collective effort & momentum
 hold the line.” -Henry
Opinion: Citizens of BC KNOW that BC public health and @BCNDP caucus are not doing all they can or need to do to break chains of transmission. Appealing to BC citizens to please work together has not been effective. BC & Canada should adopt an elimination strategy. #CovidZeroBC
@adriandix reminds us to “register, register, register.” Both he & Henry project all adults in BC will be able to receive first dose by June. No emphasis on reminding public that 1 dose only offers partial protection & even the fully vaccinated can carry, spread. #CovidZeroBC
Minister of Health Dix tells us that 398 surgeries were postponed in BC hot spot regions between April 19-25 (prior to official announcement April 26 that hospitals would be postponing “non-urgent” and “non-emergent” surgeries). No surgeries were postponed in NH or IH. #covid19BC
Dix: “This is a particularly challenging time in our COVID-19 fight, with pressures on healthcare staff and hospitals that we have not seen to this point of the pandemic.” Names healthcare workers, patients, people awaiting surgeries as people who are “counting on us.” #bcpoli
Opinion: Yes Minister Dix, they are counting on us. Waiting on partial vaccinations and appealing effectively only to those already doing their due diligence is not enough!

We count on you @BCNDPCaucus , @Adriandix & @jjhorgan to pivot: elimination strategy. #CovidZeroBC
Minister @adriandix, healthcare workers are counting on you to adopt airborne-informed policies as well.

Why are front liners STILL under protected without adequate PPE?

Why are doctors, nurses told they are NOT PERMITTED to protect themselves with #N95s, respirators? #bcpoli
Zussman @richardzussman asks for details on ICU patients. #bcpoli #covid19BC. https://twitter.com/richardzussman/status/1387865392131973124
Next, Zussman asked about cross-border vaccinations. Henry lead her response with, “We’ve been prioritizing, as you know, staff in schools
”

🧐 @bctf - How many teachers have received one dose now? @norahbowmangma1 - any news on vaccinations for school staff in SD23? #bced https://twitter.com/richardzussman/status/1387866121055862786
Reporter @PennyDaflos (<-- follow her) raises the issue of (inequitable) pop up clinics, says people are confused and frustrated. Asks Henry, “ultimately the buck stops with you. So, will you take responsibility and apologize for the vaccine free for all?” #covid19bc #vaccines https://twitter.com/jessicajbalzer/status/1387867602672787456
Many questions on vaccine hesitancy and confusion. Henry emphasizes registration in the age based program, says “everyone before July long weekend is going to be eligible and be able to access vaccine.” Talks about success of vaccinating high numbers of our elderly citizens.
Citizen Q: on protecting elderly, how is the BC gov handling healthcare workers ( #LTC/others)who have refused vaccines? Have they been reassigned to roles where they do not have to interact closely with public, given great risk they pose + many confirmed infections post-vax?
