As a result, SAPS has lost track of 500k internal firearms and 8 million pieces of forensic evidence. Over 173k cases criminal cases are backlogged and jeopardised.

Certain individuals were instrumental in SAPS’ systems being switched off a year ago - putting every single South African’s life at risk and denying justice to thousands of victims - and are fighting hard to keep it that way.

I’ve been doing some digging and one name in particular keeps popping up - Paul O’Sullivan.

“Private forensic investigator” Paul O’Sullivan is well-known for exposing high-level corrupt government officials, including the significant role he played in the conviction of Jackie Selebi.

While Mr O’Sullivan’s actions appear noble at face value, it seems there is a dark side to the “corruption-buster”.

Paul O’Sullivan has a long history of criminal and deviant behaviour… from GBV, assault, intimidation to harassing and defaming witnesses.
It seems he has become a “thug-for-hire” for individuals (including politicians) with nefarious and self-serving agendas.

Earlier this month, Paul was ordered by the Johannesburg high court to refrain from publishing defamatory statements and intimidating witnesses.

It is alleged that Paul attempted to force Old Mutual to withdraw from a civil case and intimidated attorney June Marks with threats of jail time and being struck from the attorneys register.

Paul has a history of GBV.

In March 2011, the South Gauteng High Court ordered that Paul be interdicted and restrained from assaulting, harassing, threatening, intimidating and verbally abusing an individual (a Mr Du Plessis) and his family members.

In July 2013, in another matter (Diamond v O’Sullivan), the Acting Judge Craig Watt-Pringle made the observation that Paul is “emotionally unstable” and “evidently dangerous in society if left unchecked”.

In Feb 2021, Paul began targeting Senior Carte Blanche journalist, Tony Beamish. Harassing Tony’s employers and publishing false allegations, including sexual crimes.
Tony has denied these allegations and has never been convicted of any crime.

The harassment started while Carte Blanche was investigating the DNA backlog story, a few weeks before the episode aired - exposing unfounded allegations of fraud against FDA.

In 2017 SAPS and SITA were on the verge of renewing the agreement with FDA. FDA was contacted by representatives from 2 companies, demanding 30% of their business in exchange for the contract renewal, or lose their business in its entirety.

The matter was reported to SITA, however it was confirmed that senior members of SITA and SAPS were involved with these “representatives”.

A few months later FDA was investigated for corruption by, you guessed it... Paul O’Sullivan.
FDA’s offices were raided. Evidence was falsified. A smear campaign against FDA was launched by MSM.
To date, no wrongdoing by FDA could be found and no charges were laid.

During the 3 years of court battles and disputes (SAPS & SITA lost all 9 court cases), SAPS was ordered to pay FDA multiple times.
After several attempts by FDA to resolved the matter, the systems were terminated on 13 June 2020.
