i want to give some supervisors some advice: 1) be deliberate about taking the time to check in with your colleagues and asking how they are. its easy to overwork ourselves in this pandemic. urge folks to take time off, or set blocks of time aside in a day to give someone rest
2) check in on someone’s professional and personal goals. it’s not your role to keep them stagnant, allow them to grow, allow them to grow beyond you, too. we’re all on different journeys, use your privilege to allow someone to prosper
3) Ask about pay. are your colleagues paid enough? how often are they being evaluated? are you working to elevate them internally so that they see growth in themselves? Allow the pay to reflect that
4) They don’t serve you. how do you support them in their work? Are you creating a space of equity and collaboration? what are you doing to give someone their autonomy? our styles of work are all different, so be willing to accommodate
5) people don’t always have to see their potential when they are also so often already great. tap into the strengths of a person, and the abilities. remind people that they don’t have to hold a Phd in something to be an expert, lived experiences are experience, too
