Authors who engage with their readers: a thread.
I just had an interesting chat with one of my customers before lunch break. She was saying how she was coming to find a particular book after having had a chat about it with the author herself online, and it made me reminisce.

Its crazy for me to think that a mere 8 years ago, I assumed authors were as hollywood celebrities, in that they were popular but in a different world and unwilling to engage with their fans for the most part. But then I started working at my book store and started using twitter.
It was then that I started following a bunch of authors and I started noticing them engaging with fans. I thought that was really cool! I vividly remember tweeting at @PVBrett about The Warded Man which I had just read, and then getting an answer to my tweet felt so cool!

After that I sent him a DM asking him some more lore questions and again, he was very generous of his time and answered my questions. That had the immediate effect that I was enjoying the series even more and wanted to talk about it to as many different people as I could.
A little while later, I read Kings of the Wyld and tweeted at @Nicholas_Eames my appreciation and some questions too and again I was delightfully surprised to get answers to my questions, and to learn by chatting with him that he& #39;d worked at the same book store company as I did!
Over the last few years, I would engage with many other of my favorite authors. @PeteMC666 and @BancroftJosiah were always down to chat about their work and entertain my fanboyness. @AndreaGStewart was super kind and had some nice book related chats together.
I also have very fond memories of @decastell entertaining my crazy notion that I see myself as part Argosi. Or of the legendary @WeisMargaret taking notice of my love for Dragonlance and sending her appreciation back my way.
Perhaps the best moment of all was when I asked @JohnGwynne_ a question for our book club (and probably the most fanboy question ever) of "who would win in a fight between X and Y", and he proceeded to send me a 3 page essay with detailed explanations and rankings. Mind=blown
So here I am sitting and reflecting on the effect those connections with these authors I respect and love has had on me and my work as a book seller. It definitely made me a bigger fan of those series, it certainly made me more passionate about my daily work in the book business,
It absolutely made me more excited about talking to customers about these books but also about their authors. Every little interactions I& #39;ve ever had with authors added a bit of color to the painting I create when I am recommending books to people.
It also pushed my passion for books and helped me overcome my self-confidence issues about creating the book blog I& #39;d been wanting to write for a good while, and in doing so have allowed me to meet so many great people and friends who have added joy to my life on a daily basis.
So I would like to take the time to say a very heartfelt Thank You to all the authors out there who take time out of their days to engage and connect with their fans and readers. It means a great deal to me and a lot of other people I am sure.
And to anyone else who may be too shy to send a message to an author they like, just give it a shot! It might not work out but it also just might end up brightening your day in the best way and perhaps even change your life for the better in some unexpected, yet awesome way.
