Lee’s GK training through his whole professional career was from dead balls, volleys / half volleys.

He never ever felt he was truly prepared going into a game with that type of training.

It was too simple because you knew what was about to happen. Everything was pre meditated. Mundane. Created bad habits because you didn’t need to concentrate on each ball. You could think of the next one. It was like a routine.

No decisions to make.
When you know where the ball is going, you have maximum reaction time. You know you can take a step forward and really power into it. You’ll feel yourself creeping to the side. Sometimes you’ll see GKs diving past the ball on this type of service.
That’s why we always take a touch / carry the ball before striking and encourage others to do the same.

Here’s some of our reasons for doing it:
✅ For us, the absolute minimum for a session should be realistic service. That should be the first thing before even thinking about creating a “match like environment” with bodies / distractions etc

✅ Learn to Manipulate / control the ball from different trajectory’s!
✅ Forces GK to constantly adjust their position, maintain energy and balance.

✅ Decision making / Problem solving.

✅ Realistic visual cues from server.

✅ Match like trajectory (Less predictable / chance of moving / chance of mis-hitting).
✅ Feints / chops to disrupt the GKs flow & create pauses.

✅ Higher level of Focus / concentration.

✅ Players look for space to get a strike away / snapshots this can emulate it when having no extra bodies etc
