How do you fancy a step back into #Hull’s #railway past? #Trains and railway architecture are cool. So come on, to the Wilmington Railway Station cafė. New to me, too.
It’s been our commute to work a few weeks now, while another road is closed for roadworks. I’ll admit it, I didn’t even know it existed. Lured in, by the board ‘real fire’. Inside, there’s photos of how it was in the 19thC.
Here’s the bridge I ride over most days.
The track is boxed in now, on one side, cycle and footway the other.
The signal box is something else. (View from south and north). As it is is a swing bridge, it was staffed for river traffic too. It still swings, mechanism was originally Siemens. And the company are now homed in the city producing wind turbines.
Trains would come over the bridge, and here, goods sheds - there was a large coal yard beyond, delivering coal from the docks, just a few miles away. Now, is home to various light industry type businesses.
Passengers though, would purchase tickets in the booking office - the café kitchen now, wait in the waiting room, then walk through the subway, out the back of the building, to the platform. See the tiled sides of the subway, either side of the café?
Here’s more information.
And check it out yourself, the staff are really welcoming. It’s in a really industrial area, and a busy place. Another bit of #history in #Hull, which I only found by accident. 💚
