Ducks goalie Ryan Miller, at Zoom presser announcing his retirement, is overcome by emotion after seeing video of congratulations from family, friends.
Says his dad tried to discourage him from playing goal because it was so difficult, but he was drawn to it. Grew up to become NHL career leader in wins among American-born goalies.
Highlight of video of Ryan Miller tributes: Buffalo broadcast legend Rick Jeanneret announcing his name one more time.
Says he pretty much knew this would be his last season, and so has savored every moment. Thanks Ducks, Sabres, USA Hockey and Michigan State. Ten members of his family have played at MSU!
His brother Drew volunteers to continue heckling him after he retires. Drew also asks why Ryan never let him score on him in the NHL. “It was fun to play against you,” Ryan said. Said Drew: “It was awesome.”
Miller says Buffalo, where he began his career, will always have a part of his heart. “I always felt like I owed something to Buffalo in a way…I owed something to the fans.” That inspired him to do lots of community work there.
Also says he hopes to remain connected to hockey in management or player development. Not ready to jump into coach’s grueling schedule. He surely could be an asset to an NHL team.
