Rep. McCrostie's opening remarks include an admonishment to those who harassed or scoffed at Jane Doe during yesterday's testimony. Says they should be ashamed of themselves.
Rep. Homan: This isn't about whether a crime occurred. That's for the courts. This is about his pattern of conduct with subordinates, and "whether that constitutes conduct unbecoming." She says she believes he has met that standard. #idleg
Horman says von Ehlinger misled the committee in testimony, and says he shouldn't need a written rule to know that his behavior toward subordinates was unacceptable. "His behavior has poisoned the reputation of all of us." #idleg
Rep. Gannon: If there isn't a written rule, we look to Mason's, as well as generally accepted societal customs and precedent. Private companies fire people for this all the time, he says. "I cannot imagine an officer in the military approaching an intern for a date." #idleg
Rep. Crane: "I did not feel like the defense yesterday was able to prove that the conduct by Rep. Aaron von Ehlinger was becoming to a member of the House of Representatives... There was indeed a pattern of predatory behavior that was established." #idleg
Crane points out that even though von Ehlinger had previously testified that he wasn't interested in pursuing a relationship with Jane Doe, the representative had sent her text messages after the alleged assault to tell her he wanted to see her again. Calls his testimony a lie.
Crane also referred to testimony in which von Ehlinger said he doesn't date much, then points out how many women at the statehouse he had asked out on dates in his short time at the #idleg. "History will judge us by the actions today."
Chairman Dixon: I agree that there was conduct unbecoming.

Horman moves the committee unanimously finds that Rep. von Ehlinger engaged in conduct unbecoming and recommends that the House censure von Ehlinger. #idleg
She also moves the committee support expulsion -- which requires a 2/3 vote. Censure is a simple majority vote.

Censure conditions: Suspension without pay, must immediately vacate office, and a substitute be appointed.

The motion passed. #idleg
Gannon adds that he wants an investigation of what happened yesterday when Jane Doe entered the hallway after her testimony. "Anybody who did harass or intimidate a witness should be (considered) for possible prosecution." #idleg
Horman agrees, pointing out how the committee went to great lengths to protect the identity of Jane Doe.
McCrostie agrees: "The people who come to our building... need to be safe."
Dixon: There's probably a large class here that agrees with that. "Maybe not large enough." #idleg
