1. I do get a lot of DMs from parents & students alike for career guidance. Am not good at that. A lot of things come down to opportunity, luck & prep. But I will share my thoughts & hopefully help someone. I spent 4 yrs at UZ studying MedLabSciences. Wanted to be an immunologist

2. When I got to UZ, I had never touched a computer taidzionera kwana bursar kwedu kumachonyonyo. So, I had no idea what Computer Sciences meant. Fortunately there was a guy Chitiyo who had Win95 where we played Bow n Arrow. He taught me to use a mouse

3. Fast Forward 2007, my galfriend had studied ComSciences & our pillow talk was "How does Google make money?" I married her. At the time, we cldn't afford a computer. I borrowed @JamaliDaniel's wife's. Eventually I had a CPU built by an Indian guy in Gabs, it was a grindingmill

4. We had no internet, so I wld carry the CPU to a cafe to install programs . Started by learning Delphi & Java. Tried to make my routine in the lab easier by automating things & socket programming. But nobody paid for that.

5. When the govt of Botswana paid an American company to build a Patient Management System which they did in VBasic & Microsoft Access that triggered me! Anyway, I still remember our first client, a black American Matthew Tamin who made us sweat for $10 but yaikwana 4kg dzenyama.

6. We started a company called Virtual Data with my wife & @MamboTaf's wife, we built platforms for car sales & loadboards. Eventually we left for US. On the day I was going to work at an Appalachian hospital, I also got an offer to work for a gaming company called Zoo Games.

7. Now, I have written all this background for a few reasons
- I thought I wld be an immunologist
- I didn't know I liked software development & that I was good at it until I was exposed to it
- What started as an exploration became my profession
- A lot depended on location

8. So, did I waste 4 yrs at UZ? No! A lot of things I do today use stuff that I learnt from primary school. Maps, Speed, Logic, Sets , Accounting etc. Even all the debating skills that we sharpened at the students union have great use in boardrooms & planning.
