Gonna speak on this for a moment.
Because it is horseshit.
I am stay at home mom.
I am a stay at home mom because after budgeting, I would have brought home 22.00$ after paying for childcare.
I remained a stay at home mom, because my child is disabled.
Think care for abled kids is expensive?
Try having a disabled kid.
Double or triple those prices, if the center will even take them.
Sure...it's illegal to discriminate...they do it anyways.
Tons of lower income parents have to juggle who stays home and who works.
Most of the time, staying home wins.
Childcare of absurdly expensive.
So what does it mean for me and parents like me?
It means I have little social security to rely on when I age.
It means I am reliant on my partner for money.
It means I have a now 13 year gap in my resume. Which will get longer, as my kid can't be left alone.
Me staying home is not some burning desire for "traditional values"...it is necessity.
Yes...there are benefits.
It is also very hard.
I know so so many families where one parent (usually always the mom) is forced to stay home.
This is not a lifestyle everyone enjoys.
Universal chilcare could allow so many to do what they want to do in terms of working.
At the end of the day...Universal Childcare allows for freedom of choice.
A choice for women who want to work, or just have access to chilcare when they need it. Lemme tell ya, dragging a toddler to your OBGYN is fun for NO ONE.
How amazing is this for single parents?
To be clear, I am fortunate that my husband is a very good partner.
Many who made this choice years ago are not so fortunate.
They should have acess to universal chilcare.
I care my children, and my niece.
I am not complaining about my life.
I am saying that realistically....there are some consequences for my choices.
If my husband up and left tomorrow...where am I? Up the creek without a boat or a paddle.
How am I to fund my old age?
This is real talk.
Things folks gotta think about.
It's a gamble. And it shouldn't be something anyone is forced into.
Ever.
So support Universal Childcare.
Make the best choice for your family.
As an aside...
There is a distinct reason so many stay at home parents sell things , or go the in home care route for other kids.
Money is constantly tight.
One income, in most places...it not enough.
I live in Indiana because we can make it on one income.
