BIBLE STUDY 101: Using Your Sermon Notes As A Starter - 8 Practical Steps

One of the main aims of every sermon is to get the listeners to study the scriptures for themselves.

But unfortunately, many just take notes and that's it, it remains yet another note from Church.
In this thread, you'll learn;
1. What to do with the notes you take from listening to a message/sermon
2. How to consolidate it with your own Bible research

Acts 17:10-15 has a beautiful story of the people of Berea who searched the scriptures daily after hearing the message...
From Paul. As a result many Jews and Greeks became believers.

Your further study after taking notes in Church;
1. Deepens the strength of the message in your Spirit,
2. Opens your spirit to more possibilities of the Spirit,
3. Strengthens your convictions

Consider these;
1. READ OVER THE NOTES

After taking the notes, read over it for the first time without particularly taking any critical note.

This will help you have a better view of the direction of the message & also the theme.

The title of the message would have given you an idea, though.
2. READ OVER THE NOTES AGAIN

This time, read it slowly whiles taking note of the several verses given.

The verses will obviously be in line with the theme of the message and so noting them down for your cross-referencing is important.
3. TAKE NOTE OF THE KEY POINTS IN THE MESSAGE

After you have the verses noted, take note of the key points given in the message.

This will broaden the picture that the theme or title would have established at the start.
4. CROSS-REFERENCE THE VERSES AND KEY POINTS

At this stage, enter the scriptures and check out the verses you noted from the message.

Whiles reading, pay attention to the key points you noted from the message as well.

The verses will shine more light on the key points.
5. MAKE YOUR OWN NOTES

Whiles reading verses, make your own notes based on the insights you receive from the Spirit.

You'll realise that it won't be too different from what you jotted down from the message.

This way, you have an expanded form of the message.
6. REFERENCE OTHER VERSES

Whiles reading the verses you noted from the message, several references will be made to other verses. Take note of them too.

This will help you appreciate better the scriptures because the scriptures will explain itself, giving no room for assumptions
7. CONTINUE RESEARCHING

Don't stop noting down your insights whiles reading the scriptures.

By the time you're done, you would have made an indepth study on the subject that your Pastor taught on.
8. PLAN TO APPLY IT

Once you've made your own notes, proceed to acting on what you learnt.

If it was on prayer, pray.
If it was on giving, give.
If it was on evangelism, evangelize.
If it was on grace, enjoy grace.

"But be ye doers of the Word and not hearers only" James 1:22.
Dear brethren, don't just take notes in Church just for the sake of taking notes. Understand why and it's to set you up to study the word for yourself.

I hope this will help enrich your #BibleStudy. God bless you.
