Stevens hands over an NHS facing huge challenges with regards performance, workforce & safety. His plans remain that & yet to really bear fruit for patients. No doubt he secured major investment & set foundation for change but departure now is significant & a risk to that agenda. https://twitter.com/ShaunLintern/status/1387756981767770115
Stevens had a genuine vision for the NHS but under his tenure, operationally, it struggled with the consequences of austerity and a workforce challenge, particularly in nursing, that for too long he just didn't face up to. His successor will need to meet capacity issues head on.
It might also be a fresh start for the culture of the NHS and @NHSEngland. Stevens is a control freak and his leadership of NHSE also came with a pretty toxic environment that many on the inside bemoan. Culture change must be a priority for new leadership.
On patient safety Stevens was a disappointment for me. He moved responsibility for this vital area out of NHSE shortly after his arrival & undermined work of NICE on safe staffing that meant it never completed its work. He seemed distant from safety in a way the CEO shouldnt be
An example...in 2014 Stevens personally pulled the plug on an inquiry into the death of baby Lizzie Dixon...an inquiry into her death concluded last year and found evidence of a cover up. But for me it was the lack of consideration for the family and their suffering.
