Looking back at one month ago when Yibo dropped Nike, I remember going through the likes of the posts that were forcing him to break his Nike contract; you could find people for any and every c-ent fandom: male female, old and young. They all had a hand in that but-
it's funny how life works. Yibo breaking the contract immediately meant that their faves would need to follow suit (to protect their rep as well) yet Yibo was the only one who reaped the PR benefits of that move. After all only the first one matters and is remembered.
Now the market is full of top billing celebs for the sports brands to chose from so the majority would never get to eat off Yibo's left overs anyway. And Yibo will still be the first choice of all sports brands (which is why they were lined up in front of his hotel next morning)
Now a month later, he comes back with Anta, the official national team brand, the only one that is allowed to legally print the Chinese flag on their clothes, 2nd biggest sports brand in the world after Nike. They not only gave him the highest title imaginable (leading global?😳)
They also bought a bunch of trending tags, official accounts reposting all day, NATIONAL TEAMS joining in: Equestrian, Wrestling, Taekwondo, Golf?? Tbh I'm kinda shook 👻
Afaik Anta sold 40 million RMB in the first 2 hours after announcing Yibo as spokesperson (and this only includes online sales on taobao for Yibo's main line, excluding other online platforms and offline stores).Ofc the fandom is big but all these dudes??🧐
After giving aaall this context my point is that, it's funny when we call this "karma" "comeuppance" "good things come to those who wait", but the truth is very simple:
Good things come to those who are Ready
Wang Yibo is always prepared. You can see his acting improve by bounds with every new project; During SDC3 he proved that he never stopped practicing his dancing even though he is now mainly into acting; The hobbies he picked up during his hiatus periods became his selling points
precisely because he never half-asses anything. I have been his fan since 2019 and his values have not only stayed consistent, but they are also always followed by action. As a fan and as a person, that is a way of life I admire but strive towards (not always with success)
This consistency and stability reinforced his positive image and uniqueness. To brands (and even the government) those are both big selling points. Yibo doesn't "need" his fans, because a person like him would excel in any field he chose. However, he will always have fans and
people will always consciously or subconsciously be drawn to him. I've debated before on whether it is good for him to have a big fandom etc. but in the end that is not the point because his fandom growth is organic.
He is always prepared and opportunities come to those who do not stagnate. He lost something last month, but because he was already the best, the best (of any field) will go looking for him; and that won't be because his fans have a lot of disposable income (which we do)
But because he lives the way a lot of us would like to live. (And all brands like to sell the dream of a good life duh 🤷)
