My second Mother’s Day is coming. The first was in quarantine alone with my baby. This time I’m sending myself a massive bouquet.
For the past 15 months I’ve been a new mom, a 40-something mom, a solo mom, a pandemic mom and a full time working mom while caring for my beautiful boy.
I have worked in a windowless closet everyday in a space that is 2 feet wide and 3 feet deep. Unable to see people. Just me and a microphone, brining you the news
My first week back from maternity leave is when George Flloyd was murdered. I’ve spent the past decade covering racial violence everyday. But this year it was heightened bc if the isolation and the pandemic.
On the other side of that closet door has been my beautiful baby boy. He’s gone from gurgling to walking to running while the world is on fire and I manage to provide context for YOU our listeners about some of the most difficult topics right now.
I haven’t missed a beat in coverage. Not one. And my kid has also grown into an amazing toddler. I think about the sacrifices that me and MILLIONS of women across the United States are making to work and raise families.
Many mothers aren’t so lucky. They can’t leave their jobs or they can’t work from home. They still have to provide for their families.
I want to tell the working mothers of the country right now - IT TAKES SKILL to do what you do.
There should be statues erected in honor of working mothers and the sacrifices we’ve made this year to keep our families afloat. And yet.........
How is YOUR workplace supporting YOU moms of the USA? What Mothers Day love will you be getting? What will you be giving yourselves? You deserve to be treated well. You’ve earned it.
