I know my alt is for politics but this is something that I don't think a lot of leftists realize. There's this distinction I've noticed between far left politics and moderate left politics. I've hardly ever heard anyone point it out and it's constantly driving me insane.
There's two kinds of politics which for simplicity I'm calling "defensive politics" and "offensive politics."
Defensive politics is what the left is about. Protecting people's personal freedoms. Standing up for marginalized groups. I hope that makes sense.
Offensive politics is encroaching on others. Barring other people's rights and personal freedoms. Attacking certain groups. On paper, it sounds bad, but I think a lot of far leftists do this kind of thing without noticing it.
For context, this isn't just about the government-
-and laws and stuff. It's about the mentality of leftists.
There's a striking example of radical leftists exhibiting an offensive, rather than defensive, political mindset.
I just had to watch this lovely video for my class about fermentation...
The video notes that marginalized groups are being barred from participating their own cultures and forced to assimilate. That's bad. That's where defensive politics would come in handy. The person in the video also says that she isn't telling you what to think or wear, or how-
to live your life. And yet, the entire video's premise is exactly that—telling you precisely what you can and can't do. All very racialized too. It teeters on the edge of racism. Anyway, the point is, the mindset in the video is precisely what leftist politics shouldn't be.
And yet so many radical leftists have this mindset of actively trying to ban groups of people from doing things that are really harmless... Instead of enacting defensive politics to stand up for the aforementioned oppressed groups which are the real victims.
That's all I wanted to say. I didn't plan this thread out or anything, so apologies if it's unorganized.
