i keep my promises. i have the whole transcript on a gdoc, so i will not tweet the whole thread in full at the same time, as to not flood and in return to make sure that those who do follow me can keep up without the tweets all over. so read thru EVERYTHING if you& #39;ll qrt against. https://twitter.com/taegicart/status/1387641628588793859">https://twitter.com/taegicart...
DISCLAIMER. merch collecting, or just buying on the regular, IS a privilege. it IS some luxury. everyone here knows that so it& #39;s surprising why the qrts say it like it& #39;s supposed to go against op, because SURELY if you& #39;re aware of privilege, then you& #39;re aware of the levels of it?
DISCLAIMER2. i will be talking about the play of said levels of privilege WITHIN the merch collecting space. i will not talk on, about, or over, those lesser privileged than those who CAN be here on bnstwt. please remember that. seriously.
also, i did block out the usernames and pfps, but they can still be seen in the qrts of the og tweet. please do not attack them, [some] of them did not try to put any kind of malice into their words. if you want them to see the thread, then dm it to them. don& #39;t attack anyone.
1. the "law of supply and demand" argument

first off, it seems that not a lot are aware of what the law of supply and demand actually says. L/o supply and demand is a basic law that is incorporated into most principles in the economic field. "the price where the quantity of +
the goods that people are willing to //supply// = the quantity that people demand = market equilibrium price" [1]

And yet the PCs here that are overpriced, are from those sealed albums that you can still buy at ANYTIME from We//verse. Same price as they always were.
The thing is, how exactly does the law of supply and demand that you hold so dear, so gravely affect these prices if there was never a shortage or even increase of known supply? And with the prices, no change either? Another thing is if the high price is to "bawi" the price of +
the sealed album, what does that imply? The album, even unsealed, will always have its own worth whether you like it or not. But if you want to look at it another way. The photocard is an Inclusion. Taking the photocard, selling it alone, with a price almost UP to the album,
is already a sort of thievery, is it not? This leads to the oh so trustworthy "then don& #39;t buy if you can& #39;t afford" argument.
And to put next to the first L/o supply and demand tweet, this law is a theory that explains the interaction between the sellers of a product and the buyers of a product. And the general idea is that if price increases = people supply more = but is demanded less. [1]
This isn& #39;t necessarily true for this case, is it? But then, since I /read/ my academic references, I know that this is a theory, meaning it is malleable. Which is why it& #39;s very confusing as to why everyone holds the general theory like it& #39;s a Bible, and yet refuse to accept +
that there are more things happening behind and beyond the overpricing, and the interaction of supply and demand in this /specific/ case, which do not fall under the general understanding of the L/o supply and demand.
One of the things that influence the change of factors with the supply and demand are people who think like this. How on earth will the basic/general L/o supply and demand come to play, if there are people who do not actually care about the increase in price? +
It may not be their direct doing that the prices increased in the first place. But it is a collective of circumstances like these, that those increased prices stay, or even increase more. Here is where I will put the "levels of privilege" thing that I mentioned. Read disclaimer.
First off, please try to hear yourself when someone says "i used to be able to afford this hobby, but now that prices increased, I still can but not as much" and the first thing you think is "find another hobby."
Do not expect them to just not complain, especially when there is no actual logical (that is also a ethical*), reason as to why they no longer can afford it without worry. This case does not follow the general l/o supply and demand, because all of us again are privileged +
BUT especially, because some of us, are MORE privileged than others. Middle class are more privileged than those below poverty line. Upper middle class are more privileged than middle class, etc. How will there be less demand w/ increased prices, if there are people who don& #39;t +
care for actual market worth? Those who can ignore it for this? L/o supply and demand is a model created for constant variables, and the thing is, where exactly can we find constant variables anywhere? [2]
The numbers are the reference numbers, I will be providing the gdocs of my references in APA format. It& #39;s to be seen like this:
Point, sometimes including the points before it [#]
# -> number in the citations page of the reference used.
In case someone finds the academic website citation untrustworthy, I will also add a lecture paper from a university that also explains the basic definition, I will mark it as [3].
In this field particularly towards artist merchandise, there is something called the "Death Effect" [4]. It basically means that when an artist dies/retires from their art, their merchandise/work will get a higher price tag on them. This is because the merchandise will no +
longer be produced. [4] And well, b//ts have not retired. And again the lot of overpriced photocards are still in CONSTANT production.
Basically, do not use the general idea of L/o supply and demand if it doesn& #39;t actually follow and if you won& #39;t recognize and acknowledge that it is a model and society, [levels of] privilege will always come into play. Things like this take advantage of the fact that economics +
has always had some kind of structural deception, even in things such as personal interest [5] even in things like in celebrity merchandise. But that doesn& #39;t mean that just because it& #39;s been like that, it& #39;s logical and "okay." Again, it& #39;s deception.
And we are all aware of the privilege we have to be here and participate in bns twitter. And because of that, we are aware of the limits of it. And how others can go higher before their own limit. Some don& #39;t try to look at those with lower limits.
Also... if you think "then go find something you can afford" or along those lines when someone says they can& #39;t anymore or not as much as they used to.. maybe you should reevaluate that. seriously.
Also! I would like to dive more into it, but if you can& #39;t at least comprehend/understand the rather basic points in the thread. Here& #39;s the gdocs of the references I used. I only used 5 of the ones I read, because this is a somewhat long thread and is for no comparison to +
an actual scholarly journal. But here& #39;s the link, and the one not marked with a number are the other papers I read about the L/o supply and demand, it being only a model, and even incorporated exploitation in its being. i& #39;m still adding those w/o numbers for extended ref rn
Also ! to add something, but this is of my own opinion and observation. this is something i tweeted the first day this bns account was even made https://twitter.com/triviaenvy/status/1380428826925178881?s=20">https://twitter.com/triviaenv...
^ referring to those that were purchased in sets
! nothing here was meant to attack anyone personally. which is why i blocked out usernames and told ppl not to attack anybody. the screenshots were examples and kind of "proof" that there are people who think like/say that. https://twitter.com/triviaenvy/status/1387768011793260551">https://twitter.com/triviaenv...
hi. so since people have been saying that "randomness" of the pull would completely/partially render this thread usueless; here.
again. we are looking weverse albums still in production, i thought it was obv enough not to need a separate tweet, but since this has gone to other fanbases; i will reiterate.
"it& #39;s bc the pc is random" and, like the unchanging weverse price and stock for albums, that has never changed. photocards have always been random, except for the ot7 pcs in be essential and be deluxe (im talking ab bts, i will not pretend to be familiar with other groups)
so. again. if photocards could have been priced lower before, and still not lose money. then why the rise? that is the main point.
