These are trying times to be working in publishing. Families like mine are on the ropes; it’s hugely hurtful to see how little we are considered and respected. Bigoted views are expressed without censure, and rewarded with prestigious roles within prominent organisations.

When somebody advocates for ‘sex-based spaces’ what they actually mean is a trans woman in a man’s prison, or turned away from a women’s refuge. Just let that sink in for a moment. I prefer not to talk personally, but that is what it means.

You might think that’s okay. I’m not going to try to change your mind or ask for your consideration, that’s up to you. But know that this isn’t a discussion of merely academic interest, these views have real life consequences. They actively put families like mine in danger.

And are we really suggesting that there is a debate to be had over the wellbeing of our colleagues? That to demonise, frighten and exclude trans kids is an acceptable ‘opinion’ to be associated with? Safety for some women and girls, but not all? Books for you, but not you?
