Teaching our kids about ANZAC Day this year. In the spirit of remembering, here's one of the stories we shared.

tldr: they're only this planet thanks to malaria.
This is Bert, my dad's dad.

During WW2 he served as an explosives expert in the Australian commandos (Z Special Unit).

The men in this picture were training for Operation JAYWICK, which became one of the most audacious and celebrated allied raids of WW2.
Operation JAYWICK saw men from the Z Unit travel aboard the vessel Krait toward Singapore, which had fallen 9mths earlier, to conduct a raid on Singapore Harbour.
On 26 Sep 1943, 6 men left the boat to paddle 50km in collapsible canoes. 2 nights later they paddled into Singapore Harbour to place explosives on several ships before returning to their hiding spot.

Resulting explosions sank or damaged 7 Japanese ships, comprising 39K tons.
The commandos waited until the commotion subsided then returned to Krait, which they reached 7 days later. All men returned safely to Australia. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Operation_Jaywick
