Folks in medicine, I need your help.
How do you leave the sadness at work?
The sadness of the patients who die alone or for whom there is no hope?
The sadness of ones who have to watch their family suffer?
It's not necessarily a burden. But it's always with me.

Spent a lot of time recently with a patient I had seen all week. He has no friends, no family and may not make it to next week. Learned about his loves, his hates, his regrets and joys
And of course, he's just the nicest guy.
This happens often to many of us in healthcare.

How do folks do this for decades?
I love what I do. I know why we call it being on service. It is and honor and privilege to serve. I won't ever stop being a doctor
But there's a lot of sadness. A lot.
