For the last 2yrs I've poured my heart and soul into the question of "how do we bring doctors together as a movement to save the future of our beloved profession?" 🧵/x https://twitter.com/MedicineForward/status/1387490095301742594
I've learned some things on my quest. #1, we have a MASSIVE unmet need. As doctors we should have the resources to stand together and be heard on matters that matter most to us. We don't. Our largest organization represents just 17% of us.
#2, Business should always be in the service of care. Through series of events almost too hard to imagine, we have quietly surrendered our voice to the business of healthcare.
#3, Patients are caught in the middle. They know something is wrong. They are rushed and not listened to at their appointments. They expect more from us, and it kills us inside to know that they deserve it and we can't give it.
#4, WE are too compliant. We are trained throughout our careers to stay in line, or face risks that feel unacceptable. We won't go on strike because we refuse to abandon our patients even under extreme conditions of duress. This sends a message that we can be taken advantage of.
#5, If we truly care about the future of our profession, we must take ownership of our part in this mess. We can no longer sit quietly by and say it's someone else's job to fix medicine.
#6, We don't have to have it all figured out to get started. @MedicineForward was created to be the beginning of our Archimedes lever to stand together. Membership is intentionally $5 so it's clear this is not about the money.
#8, But, it only works if large numbers of us get on board. Large numbers = a voice to stand up to what's not working. To stand up for the interests of patients, and the dr-pt relationship that is the very heart of our WHY as physicians.
#9, People feel insecure when we don't have a targeted "thing" we're going to do first to fix medicine. Having tried a few "things", the only "thing" that truly matters is building our Archimedes lever together. No lever, no voice. The status quo continues.
#10, What's the worst that can happen if you join for $5 and we fail? You're out $5. What's the worst that can happen if we continue in the direction we're headed? I'm not willing to find out, and I hope you aren't either.
People often ask what they can do to help with this movement. It's simple. Join us, and get your friends to join. Share your voice with us. Tell us what matters most to you. Encourage one another. Have each other's back. We can do this -- together!!
