luke was prepared. he faced palpatine once and was ready to face him again. had everything not gone wrong with Ben, Luke might have been the one to finish Palpatine off for good. it's thanks to the wisdom of the jedi who came before her that Rey was able to defeat the Sith.
as sad as it is that Luke died in TLJ, fans need to realise just how respectful disney has actually been to that character. he did so much in the intervening years between ROTJ and TFA to prepare. he faltered but he did not fail.

most importantly it's not strength that trumps strength. its knowledge. it's wisdom. the combined wisdom of generations of jedi is what helps rey defeat the sith.
