Ok, I guess I will comment on Faux SOTU (FauxTO??) if I must.
I don’t personally dislike Joe Biden, I just hate the space he occupies politically: a guy who leveraged his Black Best Friend to do less radical policy than the white woman he effectively stepped over to fix the disaster she tried to forestall. He doesn’t excite me.
But I can definitely appreciate his strengths: he’s empathetic; he’s competent; he thinks government can do big things. These are not small matters, and it’s why I was happy to cast my vote for him in November and encouraged everyone else to do so.
Specifically about this speech, I love:
- Republicans sitting for child poverty
- Biden just continuing around applause lines like he’s surprised people are reacting that way
I’m trying not to punch something at the lead removal proposal that we’d theoretically be 80% of the way through in a Hillary Clinton Administration
This whole pitch for the American Jobs Act feels soooooo Joe, and I find so adorable his tendency to riff a little and be like, “who’d argue with dat? Who would?”

The Republican side of the audience: we would
Mitt Romney not even reacting to giving people a living wage (which would probably be $20-25 an hour in much of the country). He seems to be reading something; probably women
A government funded pharmaceutical and health r&d agency is a legitimate breakthrough offering. Combined with a massive public health system upgrade, this would leave an incredible legacy.
The not-quite-mild xenophobia is...Not Great.
Look, I’m not saying I don’t see us in competition for global dominance, particularly with autocracy, but it’s weird to frame it as zero-sum when SWF and pension funds and other international portfolios own our debt. https://twitter.com/gothamgirlblue/status/1387580703492169731
I know I shouldn’t care about who gets credit for an idea because it’s more important that it gets done, but Hillary did childcare first goddamn it
Republicans probably sat for cancer and will sit for puppies, rainbows, sunny days, and kindness to others.
Every time I learn new things about capitalism, I get more radicalized, and after reading Piketty, I now believe a 60% marginal tax rate on annual wealth of 10 million or more and an equal marginal tax rate on estates and gifts above $5 million
If your kid can’t survive on a gift of $5 million, the extra money isn’t the solution, sorry https://twitter.com/gothamgirlblue/status/1387584192733597701
Uh, let’s please *not* be an arsenal for vaccines the way we have been an “arsenal for democracy” 😬😬😬
I love that someone hasn’t turned off their ringer *and* that the person who called them doesn’t give a fuck about what they’re doing right now
American presidents are not great about recognizing human rights abuses or arguing about them. We have zero high ground and the “unique idea” thing is undermined by allowing the GOP to shape domestic and international politics
If Joe Biden were given a brief scrubbed of identifying detail about the United States, from the same lens he just used on other countries, he would see us as irredeemably broken and in desperate need of “democracy” https://twitter.com/gothamgirlblue/status/1387585795272413184
George Floyd is not a blood sacrifice that needed to be made, and I’m tired of this energy from a guy who has never been held accountable for the ways he shaped the world to make Floyd’s death possible.
Biden: here are some facts about how much damage guns have done
Republicans:
“We the People” is the controversial statement at the core of our disagreement about the future of the country. And we did not survive the insurrection; we are slowly dying of it.
He’s not going to convince me that we’re in better political shape after that shoddy, sped-up trial failed to hold Trump accountable for inciting an insurrection to install him by violence since he failed by vote
But that was a nice speech with a lot of great ideas that Republicans wouldn’t even clap for let alone help pass into law, while they allow all of their insurgents to arm themselves to the teeth
I’m being slowly driven mad hearing Brian Williams try to apply an analytical lens to this speech, so that’s it for me. Have a nice evening everyone.
