This genuinely upset me (no, not because I'm just some crazy fan who's mad because their ship didn't become canon). I'm tired of creators ignoring and shrugging off queer interpretations of their work. (1/?) https://twitter.com/Variety/status/1387505197258321923
I'm tired of creators using "they're just really good friends" as a way to sidestep these criticisms and interpretations of the story. Yes, affection between two characters doesn't mean there is any romance. Yes, it's important to portray close male friendships on screen. (2/?)
But just saying that characters who have storylines and scenes that could be read as romantically-coded are "just gals being pals" or they're just "bros who are super close" is just a lazy, borderline homophobic, excuse. (3/?)
This isn't just limited to TFATWS or the MCU. All to often, fans are told "not to read too much into things" and it is so harmful. Queer fans, often times just young teens, look up to these shows and characters. (4/?)
It hurts when you're told that you're just making things up or thinking too much about it, when in reality, you are simply viewing the story in a different, but just as valid, way. When creators blatantly shut down these interpretations, it hurts. (5/?)
Queer representation still has a very long way to go, and it's disheartening that our queer interpretations of stories are just ignored and/or laughed at, especially when we have such little representation to begin with. (6/?)
Dismissing the feelings and interpretations of your work by fans is very disheartening. Not only does it show a lack of creativity and openness to different interpretations, it is so hurtful. I just hope that creators will do better in the future. Queer fans deserve better. (7/7)
