The Racial Justice Act gave North Carolina a historic opportunity to respond to racism and implicit bias in our criminal justice system.

And it worked. Data showed that racial bias impacted outcomes in death penalty cases. In a handful of cases, some impacted people succeeded in showing racial bias in their cases. Then the Act was repealed.

Now, when policymakers on both sides of the aisle claim to be committed to addressing systemic racism, we should reinstate and expand a law proven to help us root out racism in our criminal justice system.
