A Tale of Two Tutors

If you are a student, which tutor would you rather have instruct you?

If you are a parent, which tutor would you want supporting your children?

The day before Tom’s tutor session, he ate well and stuck to his meal plan, went to the gym and did his lifting routine, drank a ton of water and went to bed early. The next morning, Tom showed up ahead of time and prepped to get ready to teach his tutor session!
During Tom’s tutor session, a beginner became frustrated after incorrectly answering a question. Tom recognized the beginner’s behaviour because he was present and mindful of the learning environment.
Tom provided support, by acknowledging how the beginner felt and used prompting techniques to guide the student to the correct answer. Tom genuinely felt enthusiastic for the beginner’s achievement and let the beginner know they where doing a good job!
After Tom’s tutor session, he wrote general summary notes on how the session went and assessed if the beginner learned all of the learning outcomes.
Tom also made sure to document the beginner’s strengths and any demonstration of self-directed learning the beginner showed on their own.
Since Tom made time after, to review and reflect on the tutor session, he is now better prepared to provide the right amount of support and to better facilitate the beginner’s learning in the next tutor session!

The day before Teddy’s tutor session, he ate pizza and chicken wings again, finished off a six pack of beer while binge watching shows again, and went to bed past midnight again. The next morning, Teddy was hungover and late for his tutor session!
During Teddy’s tutor session, a beginner became frustrated after incorrectly answering a question. Teddy did not recognize the beginner’s behaviour because he was thinking of the night before and wasn’t paying attention to the learning environment.
Teddy missed the opportunity to provided support, by ignoring how the beginner felt and expecting the beginner to just know the correct answer. Teddy was unmotivated and wasn’t focused on the beginner’s achievement.
Teddy didn’t provide any feedback so the beginner doesn’t know if they’re doing a good job!

After Teddy’s tutor session, he didn’t write any general summary notes on how the session went, so he couldn’t assessed if the beginner learned any of the learning outcomes.
When Teddy does take notes, he only documents the beginner’s weaknesses and only focuses on what the beginner got wrong in the tutor session.
Since Teddy didn’t make time after, to review and reflect on the tutor session, he is less prepared to provide support and will only impede the beginner’s learning in the next tutor session!
One tutor took care of himself, prepared his sessions, and payed attention to the beginner in order to provide support and help when needed.

✅
One tutor did not take care of himself, didn’t prep for his sessions, and was unfocused and distracted so they were unable to recognize when they needed to provide support and help to the beginner.
